Supply&Teach is a teacher-run recruitment agency which is committed to recruiting and supporting the best supply teachers so the children in the schools we serve continue to receive the best quality teaching even when their own class teacher is not there.

We work with Primary schools across Derbyshire and the surrounding counties.

Our successful candidates will be adaptable, motivated teachers who have a good knowledge of either EYFS, KS1 or KS2 or a mix of them all.

I’ve been a teacher for 7 years and loved it – especially delivering fun, engaging lessons for the pupils in my classes. I got to a point though where I’d had enough of the late-night planning, putting my own children’s needs below those of my pupils and I was fed up with the constant scrutiny of data. The job got further and further away from its core of helping children learn new knowledge and skills.                                                                                                    A friend convinced me to give supply teaching a go and that it was actually a credible alternative to a permanent role and I’m definitely glad I did. Although it was a little daunting at first going into new schools, I’ve soon got used to it. I often go back to the same group of schools as they ask my agency for me so I’m getting to know some of the staff and pupils too.                                                                         I've chosen to just work 3 days a week as that suits me better - I get to take my own children to school and am around for them more. There’s no planning at night - joy! And I’m normally home by 4:30pm on the days I work. I’ve done it for two terms now and have been booked most of the days. There’s such a demand for supply at the moment that I’m not worried about not working.                                The pay is alright too – it isn’t quite to scale but then I don’t do all the extras anymore so I’m happy with the trade-off. All in all, I’m glad I took the plunge - less stress, no classroom to buy stuff out of my own pocket for, no school politics, more time for my family and I still get to teach children.

       You will be:

• Teaching the planned and resourced work you've been provided with, supplemented with your own subject knowledge so the lessons are high quality.

• Ensuring that the pupils produce a good level of work in line with the school's normal expectations.

• Managing behaviour so children are well-behaved in line with the school's behaviour policy.

• Marking work produced according to the school's marking/assessment policy

• Supporting a range of abilities and SEN needs

You’ll hold QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) or equivalent and have an Enhanced DBS held on the Update service (or be willing to apply for one).

Having achieved my QTS, I started to apply for jobs in my local area. I had worked on my statement and looked up some interview questions and researched interview technique. I’d asked my family to interview me with a set of questions and checked my lesson timings. Maybe this was a bit of over-kill. On reflection, I should have just relaxed and been myself.                                                                Anyway, I wasn’t getting any of the positions. I was relatively successful in getting an interview but failed at the last hurdle. I heard schools advertise for NQTs/ECTs, but actually want a little more experience. I’m not sure that helped but one word stuck with me, ‘experience’. I lack experience but how do you get it if no one will give you a chance? I started to question my own ability. Would I ever get a job? Others on my course had done ok. As pleased as I was to see my friends' getting jobs, I was struggling.                          Unfortunately, or looking back, fortunately, I didn’t get a job as a permanent teacher. Taking advice from my family, I looked at getting some experience from supply work. This was probably the best thing I did. I had always seen myself as a KS1 teacher but after a year of supply work, where I had worked in all year groups, I found that lower key stage two was for me. I was probably going for the wrong jobs when I was first looking. Not only did I gain valuable experience but lots of new behaviour management techniques, learning about the expectations in different year groups, SEND and not to mention improving my subject knowledge. What made it even better was I applied and got a job at one of the schools I did some supply in! Result!

As you get older, you realise the importance of job satisfaction more than earlier in your career. Let’s just say I wish I had made the jump a little sooner. I worked for many years in a job that didn’t particularly pay well and with little job satisfaction. At the end of the day, it paid the bills. I knew I needed a change and teaching was recommended to me. A few of my friends had children and they always said that I was good with them. Never really thought about it to be honest. Anyway, cut a long story short, I retrained and was ready for teaching.                                                                             Right, ready for teaching but where do I start, I thought to myself. It was always going to be primary school age so anywhere between 4 and 11, I guess. Having had a chat with a few friends in the profession, they explained that supply teaching can be a useful first step – find your feet, test the water etc. So that is what I did.                I joined up with a few agencies and the work started to come in. The experience I gained from going to different schools was invaluable. I was sent out to numerous schools (something I had asked for – for me what would I learn from just one school?) so, one-day I was at a rural school with mixed year group classes and the next, a town school with thirty-three in one class. I found that my age group preference was KS2 and I preferred larger schools. All this eventually enabled me to search for my perfect teaching role. I have now been teaching in KS2 at my local school for ten years! My advice - make the jump sooner!
